Below is a picture of the velocity and pressure as a function of load force. The two inch diameter cylinder has a 1 3/8 inch diameter rod. The area ratio is about 2 to 1. The system pressure is 1500 psi, about 100 bar. Notice that when the load force is 0 there is still pressure on both sides of the piston. The pressure on the “a” side is low because there is a pressure drop across the valve. The pressure on the “a” side is about one half the pressure on the “b” side because Pa*Aa-Pb*Ab=0
The picture also shows that if the load is a negative force so it pulls the rod, the pressure on the “a” will drop to 0 or cavitate. One should do this calculation when designing a machine press where the cylinder rod is pointing down and the slider is heavy.
