It takes energy to move the valve spool.  When oil flows there are flow forces that try to move the valve spool away from the correct position.  The amplifier supplies enough power to keep the valve spool in the correct position

Sometimes it takes 2 to 4 amps to move the valve spool.  The control signal is usually +/- 10 volts with little current.  Valve amplifier converts voltage to current.

You should only buy proportional valves with the on board electronics (OBE).  There are two reasons.

1 The wires from the amplifier to the valve have high current PWM signals that radiate noise.
2 Most people cannot optimize the amplifiers for the valve.
